 Google Maps has been a staple of the Internet for a long time now, but few people know how Google Maps works.



 for example, how does Google make such precise maps for so many different areas?  How can it collect so much data of the world?  Who works to maintain and improve the map?

 How all these complex features work well is why many of us have started relying on Google Maps for daily navigation.

 Why did Google launch Map?

 Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it generally useful, but Google is not the only one trying to organize information online - most of it offline.  Manik Gupta, Product Manager, Google Maps, explained - As we grow about our lives, we are trying to know the difference between the real world and the online world and maps.


 At a very basic level, Google Maps has taken a large amount of offline information and published it online such as - Highway Networks, Road Signs, Street Names and Business Names etc.


 Collecting data for Google Maps

 When it comes to collecting data to help maintain and improve Google Maps, it never seems to be enough.


 Map partners

 To help with this effort, Google partners with the most detailed and authoritative data source through its Map Partners program.  A large number of agencies present detailed data to Google, and these agencies include USD Forest Service, US National Park Service, US Geological Survey, various cities.


 This data is used to show changing boundaries and waterways, to show new routes among other things.


 Street view

 Street View is much nicer than the view around the streets and floors.  Google can read things like Road Signals, Traffic Signals and Business Names, sometimes using improvements in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capabilities.


 These turn into navigational and directional data that Maps can include in its database.  If a street name has changed since the last time it was photographed, a recent street view photo will find this out.


 Satellites

 These images are crosschecked with other layers of data, such as Street View as well as data submitted by external agencies.  This helps Maps to select geological changes, new and changed buildings, etc.


 Location Service

 Not much is known about how Google uses mobile location services to keep maps up-to-date, but it obviously does a huge job.


 Yes, that's right: if Google has access to the location data gathered by your smartphone, then you're part of Google's Crowdsourced Operation to improve and enhance Maps.

 Your location data can be used for things like real-time traffic updates, estimating current traffic speeds.  If there is no sudden traffic on a busy route, maps can be considered a turn.

 Google also uses this data to estimate the hours when individual businesses will be busy.  It also does this by keeping an eye on foot traffic in individual buildings.  Maybe it will be a little creepy, but this is another attempt to bring that offline information online.


 Google Map Maker

 Google Maps allows the user to share their knowledge about a place.  You can add locations, new roads, and even add new locations to Google Maps Makers.  This facility is directly included in Maps.

 When some mistakes accur on Google map
 Every day, changes are made to Google Maps.  Some of these may occur in addition to new locations and new roads, while other changes may include fixing faults.

 Many of these are decided by the coincidence of members of the public.  Edit place details, connect roads, and so on.  Yet Google has a large team of people working through the thousands that are recorded each day to Google.

 This is done using Google's own Map Editing Programme.  New routes are drawn by hand, roads are connected, new buildings are mapped.  This is a project that will never end.
